Today, October 7th, 2026, Gap launches an exclusive collaboration with the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Estate of Roy Lichtenstein, marking the opening week of the Whitney’s major exhibition Roy Lichtenstein: Like New. The limited-edition collection places Gap’s long relationship with American culture in dialogue with Lichtenstein’s unmistakable Pop Art vocabulary, translating his iconic imagery into an 18-piece wardrobe.
Pop Art, recast for everyday life
The Gap x Whitney Museum collection draws on Lichtenstein’s visual language, developed over four decades and defined by the wit, graphic precision and commercial imagery of American Pop Art. His work recast advertisements, comic strips and other fragments of popular culture as art, turning the familiar into a source of fascination and critique.
For the collaboration, his imagery appears across classic Gap silhouettes, including hoodies, sweatshirts, button-down shirts, T-shirts and accessories. The 18-piece collection offers a new way to encounter Lichtenstein’s work, shifting his visual language from the gallery wall into everyday dress.
A collection alongside ‘Like New’
The launch coincides with Roy Lichtenstein: Like New, the Whitney’s major fall exhibition, which gathers more than 130 works spanning six decades of the artist’s career. Curated by Meg Onli and Alex Da Corte, the exhibition examines Lichtenstein’s enduring interest in mass media, image circulation, duplication and popular culture.
Born in New York in 1923, Lichtenstein became one of the defining figures of American Pop Art. Across more than 5,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and objects, he explored the visual language of everyday life, from advertising and comic strips to landscapes, still lifes and the history of painting.
The Gap collaboration extends this legacy into another distinctly American medium: clothing. Lichtenstein’s imagery appears on familiar wardrobe staples, creating a direct link between Pop Art, fashion and the visual culture that has shaped both.
Available from October 7
The 18-piece Gap limited edition is available from today, October 7, 2026, at select Gap stores, through Gap.com, Whitney.org and at the Whitney Museum store.
