DRIFT's performance marks the largest public art work in Central Park and is the first drone flight over the park

Relationships between natural phenomena and technology

DRIFT, the renowned Dutch studio led by artists Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn, stunned audiences with their groundbreaking public art performance, Franchise Freedom. This captivating event took place on Saturday 21 October 2023, when 1,000 drones gracefully floated above Central Park’s iconic lake, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle. The mesmerizing aerial sculpture mimicked the graceful movements of a flock of starlings, marking the first drone flight ever performed in Central Park.

A five-year collaboration between DRIFT, Drone Stories, the New York City Mayor’s Office and Therme US made this extraordinary and highly anticipated performance possible. To bring this ambitious event to life, Therme US, an esteemed wellness company known for bringing advanced wellness destinations from Europe to major cities in the US, joined forces with the talented artists and organizations involved.
