Using telescopes equipped with special filters, planetary cameras and astro-specific software, McCarthy skillfully documents the fascinating details of celestial events. His portfolio includes images of the International Space Station passing by, the crimson glow of nebulae, the glow of asteroids and the cratered surface of the Moon. More recently, McCarthy’s focus has been on images of the sun’s chromosphere, the plasma layer between the sun’s surface and its upper atmosphere. They are then stitched together using special computer software.
