Anselm Kiefer in Vienna State Opera

Anselm Kiefer has been chosen to design the 26th installment of the Safety Curtain at the Vienna State Opera. Initiated by museum in progress, an immaterial laboratory exploring the future of museums, in collaboration with the Vienna Opera, the Safety Curtain project has redefined the traditional function of safety curtains, transforming them into temporary exhibition spaces for contemporary art since its inception in 1998.

The jury, which includes Daniel Birnbaum, Bice Curiger and Hans Ulrich Obrist, has selected the German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer for the 2023 edition of the Safety Curtain project at the Vienna State Opera. Kiefer will present his piece Solaris, inspired by the 1961 science fiction novel of the same name by Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, which tells the story of a distant alien planet and the all-encompassing entity that resides there.
