SUSTAINABLE AUTOMOTIVE

Ford is advancing its green manufacturing by using recycled olive tree waste to make car parts, reducing the use of plastic and promoting environmental sustainability. Inspired by the COMPOlive project, which aims to improve the circular economy of olive production, Ford engineers in Cologne, Germany, used simulation technology to assess the feasibility of using olive trees for durable and mouldable components. Prototypes of footrests made from 40% fibres and 60% recycled plastic were successfully produced using a liquefaction process and injection molding. Ford’s innovative approach not only reduces plastic waste but also contributes to cleaner air by avoiding the incineration of waste. Ford is now exploring the mass production of these environmentally friendly parts for electric vehicles.
