Contemporary art leader Takashi Murakami will hold a major solo exhibition at Kyoto’s KYOCERA Museum of Art for its 90th anniversary, his first major exhibition in Japan in eight years. Entitled Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto, the exhibition will feature around 170 works, including newly painted masterpieces and series never before exhibited in Japan.
Murakami’s diverse methods challenge the Western-centric art scene. He offers a Japanese perspective that questions the value of art. The central theme of Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto revolves around the city itself, serving as a reflection on its historical significance, contemporary developments and future trajectory. Artist explores Kyoto’s vibrant artistic heritage during the Edo period and its transformation over time, juxtaposed with the influence of Western culture that has shaped its identity today.
The exhibition will be open to the public on 2 March and will be on view until 1 September.
