AI and art unite to highlight climate impact

Dada Projects, an all-female creative team led by Christina Worner, has partnered with Google DeepMind to explore the intersection of AI and sustainability. This collaboration has resulted in two new films that visualise how AI technology can enhance our understanding of global warming and improve extreme weather forecasting.

The first film, AI for Sustainability, demonstrates AI’s ability to analyse vast amounts of real-time and historical data, providing insights into global ecosystems at both macro and micro scales. It highlights AI’s role in preserving vital marine ecosystems, such as the efficient absorption of CO2 by algae.

The second film, ‘Weather, Climate and Nowcasting’, shows how AI is playing a crucial role in forecasting extreme weather scenarios, helping to predict disasters such as hurricanes and floods. Using tools such as DEM Earth, Cinema 4D, TouchDesigner and Houdini, Dada Projects accurately visualised geographic coordinates, and textured terrain and created slow-motion visuals to represent temperature changes and weather patterns. These technical elements illustrate the generative and dynamic capabilities of AI to handle large amounts of data efficiently.

Throughout the creative process, Dada Projects spent time with scientists, engineers, researchers and ethicists to discuss key AI issues and used these conversations to inspire their artwork. The team was given complete creative freedom to interpret the shared knowledge through their unique lens. Their work highlights the potential of AI to provide a comprehensive perspective on climate impacts and improve disaster preparedness, ultimately paving the way for a more sustainable future.
