French artist JR has created a new installation on the renovating façade of the Palais Garnier, inspired by Plato’s allegory of the cave. The project, titled Retour à la Caverne, transforms the opera house’s iconic exterior into a giant cave opening with a rock and light perspective.
The installation is made up of a collage of images that play on the romantic codes of the 19th century, as well as references to the great stage sets of operas by Berlioz and Wagner. The result is a work that is both visually striking and thought-provoking, inviting viewers to reflect on the nature of reality and the power of art. In addition to the installation on the façade, the invited artist has also created a series of projections that will be shown on the Place de l’Opéra from September 9 to 17. The projections will feature excerpts from lyrical and choreographic works associated with the Paris Opera, providing an opportunity to experience the art of the opera house from a new perspective.
JR’s Retour à la Caverne will be on view from September 7 to 25. The installation is free to visit, and the projections are free to attend.
