Architectural Mastery

Hong Kong’s M+ Museum presents I.M. Pei: Life Is Architecture, the first comprehensive retrospective of renowned architect Ieoh Ming Pei. The exhibition celebrates Pei’s seven-decade career, including iconic projects such as the National Gallery of Art East Building in Washington, D.C., the modernisation of the Louvre in Paris, the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha.

The show explores six themes: Pei’s Cross-Cultural Foundations, Real Estate and Urban Redevelopment, Art and Civic Form, Power, Politics and Patronage, Material and Structural Innovation, and Re-interpreting History through Design. These sections place Pei’s work in dialogue with social, cultural and biographical contexts, revealing his transcultural vision and its impact on contemporary architecture. The retrospective features an extensive selection of drawings, sketches, film, models, photographs and archival documents, many exhibited for the first time. Newly commissioned photographs by contemporary photographers further enhance the exhibition.

This retrospective not only honours Pei’s legacy but also offers an in-depth look at his contributions to the field of architecture, making it a must-see for enthusiasts and professionals alike. The I. M. Pei: Life Is Architecture exhibition runs until January 5th, 2025.
