This autumn, with its 33rd Masters Series Award and Exhibition, the School of Visual Arts (SVA) will honour design legend Stefan Sagmeister. Titled The Masters Series: Stefan Sagmeister, the exhibition will be on view at the SVA Chelsea Gallery from August 29th to October 12th, 2024.

The show, a comprehensive career retrospective, will explore Sagmeister’s innovative contributions to the world of design. Known for his groundbreaking work on album covers for legendary artists such as the Rolling Stones and David Byrne, Sagmeister has also collaborated with high-profile clients such as Lou Reed and HBO. His work is celebrated for its bold, unconventional approach, often using his own body as a medium to explore themes of personal and social transformation.

The exhibition features a rich array of Sagmeister’s work, including elements from his previous exhibitions, published books, and influential design and film projects. A miniature theatre will show Sagmeister’s films on a loop, and interactive installations will engage visitors to create a unique, immersive experience.

Sagmeister emphasised the importance of bringing together different facets of his career for public enjoyment and interaction, noting that it was particularly meaningful to present his work at his favourite art school in New York City. Established in 1988 by SVA founder Silas H. Rhodes, the Masters Series honours the great visual communicators of our time and provides greater exposure to influential designers, illustrators, art directors and photographers.

Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the creative journey of Stefan Sagmeister, whose work has profoundly shaped the field of contemporary design.
