Avant-Garde and Tokyo

Mikio Sakabe, a pioneering Japanese fashion designer, has redefined the boundaries of contemporary fashion with his unique blend of whimsical and philosophical elements. His innovative approach, influenced by his extensive education in Paris and Antwerp, has made him a key figure in Tokyo’s fashion scene. Through his work, Sakabe not only creates captivating designs but also addresses complex societal issues, making his contributions both artistically and culturally significant.

Mikio Sakabe, a renowned Japanese fashion designer, has consistently pushed the boundaries of fashion through his unique perspective and innovative designs. Born in 1976, Sakabe began his journey in fashion with his studies at ESMOD in Paris and the Hogeschool in Antwerp, where he graduated in 2006. His early work garnered significant attention, winning the Fashion Special Prize at ITS#5 in Trieste, Italy. By 2007, he was showcasing his collections at Paris Fashion Week, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in the fashion industry.

Tokyo’s Unique Fashion Identity

Sakabe believes the evolution of Tokyo fashion is unique and emphasises its dynamic and responsive nature. He notes, ‘It’s a little bit easier to start a brand here because brands can find their community or market in Japan, China or Korea easier’, underscoring Tokyo’s vibrant fashion environment, which contrasts with the more established traditions of European fashion capitals, such as Paris and London. Sakabe’s observations reveal a curiosity about why European streets often lack the fashion-forward looks that are ubiquitous in Tokyo.

The Philosophy Behind the Design

Sakabe’s designs balance playful yet philosophical elements. He describes his creative process concisely: ‘I believe fashion is a bridge between reality and fantasy, so I design with a balance of these two things’. His collections often feature a fusion of fun, childlike elements with serious, mature designs. This is exemplified in his metallic-blush puff-sleeve dresses and power-shouldered black suits, creating an aesthetic that invites viewers to explore deeper meanings.

Educator and Mentor

As the founder of ME School, a fashion academy, Mikio is deeply committed to education. He believes in a reciprocal learning process between students and teachers. ‘I think the most important thing is the exchange where both students learn and teachers also continue to learn’, he explains. This approach creates a collaborative environment that encourages continuous growth and innovation. Sakabe also founded the Three Treasures group, an initiative that supports young brands by connecting them with investors and manufacturers, helping them turn creative dreams into reality.

Societal Injustice

Sakabe’s FW23 collection drew inspiration from Japan’s hikikomori phenomenon (editor’s note: hikikomori (Japanese: ひきこもり or 引きこもり, lit. ‘pulling inward, being confined’), also known as severe social withdrawal, is total withdrawal from society and seeking extreme degrees of social isolation and confinement. Hikikomori refers to both the phenomenon in general and the recluses themselves, described as loners or ‘modern-day hermits’), a topic that might be unfamiliar to Western audiences. He explains his approach to translating complex societal issues into fashion: ‘I believe that viewing reality from different angles can be a catalyst for self-reflection and contemplating the next stage of evolution’.

Fusion of Past and Future

In his Tokyo Fall 2024 collection, Sakabe combined historical dress elements with futuristic materials and techniques. He elaborates, ‘Modern people often think about the future and the past as they live. I felt a growing connection with the present, so I increasingly added elements that created a sense of dissonance’.

Looking Ahead

As for the future of his brand and his impact on the fashion industry, Sakabe remains open to possibilities. ‘We will see’, he says, indicating a readiness to embrace whatever comes next. His forward-thinking yet reflective practice is definitely going to leave the fashion scene talking and discussing for years to come.
