Biennale Danza Wayne McGregor International Festival of Contemporary Dance

Biennale Danza 2025: Wayne McGregor leads a powerful reimagining of the Festival of Contemporary Dance

This July, Venice will once again become the beating heart of contemporary movement as Biennale Danza 2025 returns to the city’s grand stages. From July 17th to August 2nd, the International Festival of Contemporary Dance invites global audiences to witness a visionary exploration of mythology and motion. Under the bold artistic direction of Wayne McGregor, the 19th edition of this world-class event promises to push the boundaries of what contemporary dance can say—and how it says it.

Themed Myth Makers, Biennale Danza 2025 reconsiders how new myths emerge through the moving body. According to Wayne McGregor, myths are not relics of the past but dynamic frameworks through which artists make sense of change. With more than 160 performers featured in 75 events, this year’s International Festival of Contemporary Dance is both a celebration and a challenge to tradition.

One of the festival’s highlights is On the Other Earth, an immersive installation by Wayne McGregor that blends choreography, AI, and 360-degree technology. It is one of many projects that showcase the forward-thinking nature of Biennale Danza. New works at the International Festival of Contemporary Dance include A Good Man is Hard to Find by Bullyache, Sisifo felice by Philippe Kratz and Pablo Girolami, and the much-anticipated La Mort i la Primavera by La Veronal’s Marcos Morau. Not to be missed: Ventre do Vulcão by Tânia Carvalho and the Italian premiere of Simulacro by Kor’sia.

Twyla Tharp will open Biennale Danza 2025 with Slacktide and Diabelli, receiving the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. The Silver Lion goes to Carolina Bianchi, whose Cadela Força: The Brotherhood confronts gender politics with visceral impact.

This year’s Biennale Danza, under Wayne McGregor’s fearless curation, ensures the International Festival of Contemporary Dance remains not just a destination, but a movement—a living myth in its own right.
