Chanel-backed artist residency launches at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo

The Pinacoteca de São Paulo has joined forces with Chanel to launch a groundbreaking annual artist residency dedicated exclusively to women artists. Supported by the Chanel Culture Fund, this initiative provides studio space, mentorship, and international visibility through Chanel’s global Art Partners network. The first edition debuts on August 23rd, 2025, with São Paulo–born artist Juliana dos Santos, who presents her institutional solo debut, Temporã.

Temporã: an immersive exhibition rooted in nature

Juliana dos Santos, the residency’s first recipient, is celebrated for her research into natural pigments and their relationship to perception. For Temporã, she worked with members of the public in collaborative workshops at the museum, applying pigments from plants such as brazilwood, yerba mate, and the Clitoria ternatea flower onto large canvases.

The exhibition reflects her interest in transformation and time, as the pigments oxidize and evolve long after the works are completed. Curator Lorraine Mendes describes the project as a study in unpredictability, where the composition develops its own path. Dos Santos sees this residency as a rare chance to experiment at scale, with the structural support to bring her artistic research to its fullest potential.

Temporã will be on view at the Pinacoteca’s Pina Contemporânea building (Galeria Praça) from August 23rd, 2025, through February 8th, 2026.

Chanel Culture Fund expands global support for the arts

Through the Chanel Culture Fund, the French fashion house has steadily deepened its cultural footprint worldwide. With this residency, Chanel not only supports artistic production but also addresses the historic underrepresentation of women in contemporary art. According to Pinacoteca’s director Jochen Volz, Chanel’s three-year commitment enables the museum to invest in emerging voices while situating Latin American art in a broader international dialogue.

Residents will also benefit from Chanel’s Art Partners network, which connects more than 40 cultural institutions across five continents. This exchange offers participants access to mentorship, resources, and opportunities for collaboration beyond national borders.
