Fashion & Interiors: A Gendered Affair

MoMu’s forthcoming exhibition, Fashion & Interiors: A Gendered Affair, delves into the nuanced interplay between fashion, interior design, and gender, presenting a captivating exploration of both historical and contemporary works. Running from March 29th to August 3rd, 2025, this ambitious project examines how 19th-century domestic ideology positioned women as the central figures in beautifying both themselves and their homes, creating a visual unity between their clothing and interior décor.

The exhibition also delves into the contributions of male creatives like Henry van de Velde, who sought to harmonize architecture, furniture, and fashion into cohesive works of art. Modernist designers such as Adolf Loos, Lilly Reich, and Le Corbusier, known for their minimalist ideals, countered this aesthetic by prioritizing functionality over decoration in both interiors and clothing.

Contemporary works from designers including Maison Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester, Raf Simons, and Hussein Chalayan highlight the enduring dialogue between fashion and interior design. Notable pieces include Hussein Chalayan’s conceptual garments that blur the boundaries between clothing and furniture and Raf Simons’ designs that reinterpret historical textiles in modern silhouettes.

Curated by Romy Cockx, with exhibition design by Altu Space and graphic design by Jelle Jespers, this exhibition features an impressive array of loans from institutions like the German Textile Museum Krefeld, Vitra Design Museum, and Fondation Le Corbusier. Through this multidisciplinary approach, Fashion & Interiors challenges visitors to reflect on how design shapes both personal identity and domestic spaces.

Don’t miss this thought-provoking exhibition that redefines the connections between gender, fashion, and interior design.
