The Approximations of Utopia project is a new work by artist Marco Brambilla that will be on view as part of Midnight Moment in Times Square from June 1st to June 30th, 2024.

The concept of the project is to recreate a vision of the World’s Fair of the future using archival images and artificial intelligence technology. Each algorithmic architectural fragment reflects not only the spirit of a particular nation and society but also their aspirations and dreams for the time. Viewers will walk through dynamic collages of the past, immersing themselves in an unrealised exhibition free from geographical and temporal constraints. The first part of the project focuses on the six historic World’s Fairs that embodied the utopian idea of Better living through technology. Various AI programmes including Dall-E 1, Runway, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion and Magnific AI have been used to create these visual compilations.

The project demonstrates how modern technology can bring the past to life and imagine a possible future full of meaningful and peaceful lives and civilisations. The event commemorates the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Queens World’s Fair, whose main symbol was the Unisphere, the world’s largest sphere, designed by Gilmore D. Clark.
