To celebrate one year since its opening, the Gilbert & George Centre has announced its second exhibition. Gilbert & George’s London Pictures opens on 12 April and runs until the end of 2024.
As the largest group of images ever created by Gilbert & George, London Pictures offers both a directory of human behaviour in the city and a moral portrait of our times. Gilbert & George spent several years stealing newspaper posters from around London, filtering and sorting the stories by theme. More than a decade after their first world tour, the Centre will present 28 of the 292 images in the London Pictures series, many of which have never before been seen in the UK. The view of these London Pictures in the year 2024 will be a reflection on how society has changed over the years.
“London is the most important part of our inspiration. It is all that surrounds us. And so we have been able to include all this remarkable surface of thoughts and feeling that we find in these posters…” – Gilbert & George.
This complete series was last exhibited in 2012 in Athens, Berlin, Brussels, London, Naples, Hong Kong, New York, Paris and Salzburg.
