On May 31st, LUMA Arles opened the exhibition Living Landscape, featuring immersive and interactive artworks by DRIFT. The project is curated alongside an exhibition at the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh Arles, celebrating the return of The Starry Night to Arles after 136 years. DRIFT’s installations focus on relationality and movement, exploring the visible and invisible elements of nature, in line with Van Gogh’s artistic explorations.
The event will include a unique drone performance by DRIFT, tracing movements inspired by Van Gogh’s paintings against the night sky above the Frank Gehry Tower. Murmuring Minds, a new interactive installation, explores the patterns that govern natural processes. Within a defined space, sixty autonomously moving blocks simulate a swarm and interactively engage participants.
Maja Hoffmann, founder of LUMA Arles, emphasises the significance of dedicating the main gallery to DRIFT’s installation, highlighting Frank Gehry’s Van Gogh inspired work. Murmuring Minds becomes a dynamic performance in which human interaction influences the movement of the blocks. This installation challenges the distinction between the natural and the artificial, emphasising the complexity of decision-making processes.
Living Landscape will be open to the public at LUMA Arles from June 1st to September 29th 2024, offering an immersive experience that redefines the relationship between art, technology and nature. Through this project, DRIFT invites audiences to engage deeply with the natural world and reflect on their role within it.
