Passions of the North

Passions of the North

Step into the vibrant world of Nordic art at Kunstsilo, Southern Norway’s newest cultural destination, which opens its doors on May 11th, 2024. Located on the waterfront of the picturesque Odderøya peninsula in Kristiansand, the new museum marks the convergence of history and innovation, housing the Tangen Collection alongside the Southern Norway Art Museum.

Passions of the North, Kunstsilo’s inaugural exhibition curated by the esteemed Åsmund Thorkildsen, offers an immersive journey through 20th-century Nordic art. With over 600 works from the Tangen Collection, it’s the largest exhibition of Nordic art under one roof, showcasing the region’s rich artistic heritage.

Experience Nordic modernism first-hand as the exhibition explores the interplay between global influences and local identity, exploring themes of social change, urbanisation and the human experience. From vibrant cities like Berlin and Paris to the tranquil landscapes of the Nordic countries, artists grappled with the complexities of modern life, infusing their work with passion, exploration and introspection.

Witness the evolution of art and society through the lens of Nordic artists whose works reflect the zeitgeist of the 20th century and resonate with contemporary relevance. As Nicolai Tangen, the collector behind the Tangen Collection, aptly notes, the abstract language of Concrete Art challenges the viewer to think and feel, underscoring the enduring power of artistic expression.

Don’t miss out on this cultural odyssey at the Kunstsilo, where art, history and innovation come together to celebrate the passions of the North.
