Redefining sound

Redefining sound

MoMA celebrates the art of sound through an interactive online event called Sound Machines, in collaboration with Feral File, a digital art platform created by and for artists. In Sound Machines, seven artists explore the mysterious realm of sound by creating works that merge visual and sonic elements, forging new connections between them, technology, and art.

Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst, creators of the Holly+ instrument, present Play From Memory (2024), an exploration of human and machine music learning. Yoko Ono transforms Sound Piece V (1996 – 2024) into a digital format, creating an evolving archive of laughter. Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley’s Cancel Yourself (2024) challenges traditional gaming roles with an immersive soundtrack. American Artist and Tommy Martinez’s Integrity Protocol/Lower Limb Lecture (2023 – 24) allows participants to create soundscapes from the artists’ voices. 0xDEAFBEEF’s Payphone (2024) includes live performances that reveal the history of telephony.

The showcase will be accessible on the internet, allowing a global audience to participate in this auditory adventure. These artworks, part of a series of 30, will be auctioned on Ethereum from 14 March. Immerse yourself in this sound journey via the Feral File website.
