The Albertina Museum and the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation collaborated on the exhibition, inspired by the generous donation of around 100 works by the Foundation. Roy Lichtenstein. A Centennial Exhibition features works from private collections worldwide and from renowned institutions such as the Whitney Museum and the MoMA in New York, the Museum Ludwig in Vienna, and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. The exhibition is a journey through Lichtenstein’s prolific five-decade career.
Roy Lichtenstein’s distinctive cartoon-like style, characterized by bold colors, clean lines, and Ben Day dots, made a significant mark on the American art scene in the 1960s, and he is known for his depictions of stereotypical characters such as blondes, war heroes, and comic book characters. Beginning with Lichtenstein’s early 1960s works such as Look Mickey, the exhibition features his iconic black and white paintings inspired by product advertisements, enamel landscapes, and interpretations of works by artists such as Picasso, Dalí, Kirchner, and Pollock. A highlight is a massive Brushstroke sculpture, symbolizing the artist’s departure from traditional canvas art.
The Roy Lichtenstein. A Centennial Exhibition runs from 8 March to 14 July 2024 at the Albertina, Vienna.
