The White Cube Bermondsey Gallery in London is currently hosting the first major European retrospective of acclaimed American artist Richard Hunt. Titled Richard Hunt: Metamorphosis – A Retrospective, the exhibition runs from April 25th to June 29th, 2025, and spans more than sixty years of Hunt’s practice.
Featuring over 30 pivotal works, the show explores how sculptor Richard Hunt developed a distinctive language in metal. From his early civil rights–era pieces, like Hero’s Head (1956), to his mythologically inspired works such as Linear Peregrination (1962), the retrospective traces his deep engagement with form, identity, and cultural history.
Standouts include Dogonese (1985), which references African visual traditions, and Steel Garden (2013), installed in the courtyard as a symbol of growth emerging from industry. Reaching Up (2022), a recent bronze sculpture, reflects Hunt’s ongoing exploration of aspiration and transformation.
Through fluid forms and welded gestures, Richard Hunt has continually redefined the potential of abstract sculpture. This retrospective not only honors his artistic legacy but places his vision in urgent dialogue with the present.
