Ryuichi Sakamoto’s KAGAMI+ project brings music and mixed reality art together

From June 27th to October 12th, 2026, VS. Umekita Park North Park at Grand Green Osaka presents Ryuichi Sakamoto & Tin Drum: KAGAMI+, an expanded edition of the acclaimed work created by the late composer with New York-based studio Tin Drum. Combining mixed reality art with the atmosphere of live performance, the exhibition offers a rare encounter with one of modern music’s defining figures through a seamless blend of sound, technology, and visual storytelling.

Mixed reality art creates a concert beyond time

Conceived during the final four years of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s life, KAGAMI premiered at The Shed in New York in 2023 before touring internationally. Its Japanese debut introduces KAGAMI+, created especially for Osaka.

Wearing transparent mixed reality headsets, visitors enter a shared environment where a photorealistic, three-dimensional Sakamoto appears at his grand piano through advanced volumetric capture technology. Free to move around the performance, audiences can experience the composer from shifting perspectives as luminous digital landscapes respond to the music.

Far more than a technical feat, KAGAMI+ creates the uncanny feeling of sharing the same room with Sakamoto.

A multisensory tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto’s creative universe

Beyond the central performance, KAGAMI+ extends into a sensory-rich exhibition featuring photographs, archival materials, video works, texts, and a fragrance created by Sakamoto himself. Additional installations include Time, Time, developed with Shiro Takatani, Ryuichi Sakamoto: Playing the Piano 2026 – D, and a newly commissioned sound work.

Directed by Todd Eckert, the project is the result of years of collaboration between Tin Drum and Sakamoto, demonstrating how mixed reality can preserve artistic presence while opening new possibilities for performance.
