SlowDancing Anniversary Art Installation

Presented by artist David Michalek and co-directed by NYCB’s Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan, this large-scale video exhibition features over 50 slow-motion films of the current NYCB dancers performing moments from the Company’s extensive repertoire – spanning from the works of co-founder George Balanchine classics to more recent creations such as Justin Peck’s Copland Dance Episodes (premiered in January 2023). Each film captures a movement sequence of approximately five seconds and plays back over a period of 10 minutes. Combinig action and image, animation and stillness, theater and painting, they offer a unique perspective on dance.

David Michalek, the creative mind behind SlowDancing, has a history of exploring decelerated time and marginal moments through his video installations. His innovative approach to capturing movement and emotion has led to several iterations of SlowDancing, each focusing on different aspects of human expression. With SlowDancing/NYCB, Michalek brings his expertise to the world of ballet, offering a mesmerizing visual journey through NYCB’s iconic choreography. SlowDancing/NYCB will be displayed on a triptych of screens, mounted on the façade of the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. The installation will be open to the public from 7:00 pm to 11:30 pm every night, from September 18 to October 1.
