This winter, the Old Royal Naval College in London will host Mars by artist Luke Jerram, an awe-inspiring installation on view from November 23rd, 2024, to January 28th, 2025. Measuring seven meters in diameter, this illuminated sculpture showcases detailed NASA imagery of Mars, scaled to about a millionth of the planet’s actual size. Set in the iconic Painted Hall, often called Britain’s Sistine Chapel, the installation will rotate gently, creating a mesmerizing fusion of science and art.
Mars is the third in Jerram’s series of astronomical installations, following his acclaimed works Gaia and Museum of the Moon. The artist aims to transport viewers to the barren Martian landscape, evoking a sense of wonder and appreciation for Earth. Jerram hopes visitors will feel connected to the planet’s desolate beauty, contrasting it with the richness of life on Earth.
The exhibition will feature a surround-sound score by BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones, including audio from NASA’s Mars missions. In addition to the installation, the venue will host a series of Mars-themed events, from yoga under the artwork to silent disco nights.
