Carlijn Jacobs has collaborated with designer Sabine Marcelis to create her first solo photography exhibition entitled Sleeping Beauty at Foam in Amsterdam. The exhibition showcases Jacobs’ existing work, while also introducing new pieces to the public. Sleeping Beauty is an invitation into the realm of the subconscious, where limitless possibilities unfold. The exhibition includes a mix of commissioned and autonomous works, making their debut at Foam. The museum space is enhanced by the artistic designs of Sabine Marcelis.
Carlijn Jacobs is fascinated by traditional forms of costume and disguise, drawing connections between phenomena such as the Japanese geisha and the enduring tradition of the Venetian carnival, and the contemporary beauty and fashion landscape. Jacobs is fascinated by the idea of the mask when you can hide behind something and become someone else. In her own words, the whole world of fashion is essentially a form of escapism.
The exhibition Sleeping Beauty runs until 21 January 2024. Check the Foam website for more details.
