From February 15th, 2025, to February 16th, 2026, Mona in Tasmania unveils MIRRORSCAPE, an immersive installation by French artist and stage director Théo Mercier. Transforming the museum’s former library into a vast landscape of sand, Mercier crafts a scene of destruction—part fossilized ruin, part prophetic warning.
Constructed entirely from locally sourced sand, the installation evokes the aftermath of a natural catastrophe—a hurricane’s wake, a tsunami’s imprint, or the silent erosion of time. Mercier describes the work as a “panoramic cell,” a frozen moment in an endless cycle of destruction and renewal. By drawing inspiration from Tasmania’s shifting sandstone formations, the artist blurs the lines between past, present, and future.
More than an aesthetic spectacle, MIRRORSCAPE compels us to confront humanity’s impact on the Earth. Curator Sarah Wallace sees the work as a meditation on fragility and impermanence, urging us to reconsider our relationship with an environment that bears witness to both creation and collapse.
As the sands shift over the course of the exhibition, the work itself will evolve, mirroring the forces that shape the world around us. Step inside MIRRORSCAPE, where time stands still yet never ceases to move.
