Tony Cragg brings his sculptural vision to the stage of the Staatstheater Meiningen for the premiere of Castor et Pollux on February 21st, 2025. The celebrated sculptor collaborated with co-set designer Verena Hemmerlein to create an abstract, sculptural environment that enhances the opera’s mythological and emotional depth.
Inspired by Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Baroque masterpiece, the set design reflects themes of fate, sacrifice, and divine intervention. Cragg’s large-scale metal and fiberglass sculptures transform the stage into a dynamic landscape where performers interact with towering forms. The production, conducted by Christopher Moulds and directed by Adriana Altaras, brings together striking visuals and intricate musical storytelling. The sculptural elements echo the contrasts within the opera—earthly struggles versus celestial power, love versus duty. This innovative staging reinterprets Rameau’s work through a contemporary artistic lens, merging movement, music, and form. Additional performances run through July 2025.
