UBS Digital Art Museum and teamLab Borderless Hamburg redefine European art

In 2026, Hamburg will become home to the UBS Digital Art Museum, a groundbreaking institution poised to reshape Europe’s cultural map. As the largest museum in Europe dedicated entirely to digital and immersive art, the UBS Digital Art Museum occupies a prime location in the city’s HafenCity district, nestled between the Elbphilharmonie and the Maritime Museum. This visionary project opens with a spectacular permanent installation: teamLab Borderless Hamburg.

Developed by the world-renowned Japanese art collective teamLab, teamLab Borderless Hamburg transforms the traditional museum experience. Rather than presenting static retrospectives, the exhibition creates an interactive, boundaryless world where digital artworks move, evolve, and react to visitor presence. Towering 12-meter ceilings accommodate glowing landscapes, kinetic light structures, and fluid environments that invite audiences to explore without limits. As the heart of the UBS Digital Art Museum, teamLab Borderless Hamburg encourages participation, play, and a deep sense of immersion.

Artistic Director Ulrich Schrauth explains that the UBS Digital Art Museum is designed to dissolve the barrier between art and audience. It’s a space where digital creativity becomes tangible, inclusive, and emotionally resonant. Visitors don’t just look at art—they walk through it, touch it, and become part of it.

The concept originated with tech entrepreneur Lars Hinrichs, who was inspired by a visit to teamLab’s Tokyo installation in 2019. That vision now manifests as teamLab Borderless Hamburg, a cornerstone that will continuously evolve while anchoring the museum’s long-term programming. Though UBS is a naming and lead partner, the UBS Digital Art Museum is a privately led initiative, guided by artists and focused on audience experience.

Sustainability is also central to the mission. The UBS Digital Art Museum aspires to become Europe’s first climate-neutral art institution, integrating carbon-conscious operations and ethical standards from day one. And with teamLab Borderless Hamburg at its core, the museum sets a new precedent for how we experience contemporary art—open, immersive, and entirely borderless.
