MACK and Webber present Yorgos Lanthimos: Photographs, the acclaimed filmmaker’s first exhibition of still photography, on view at Webber 939 in Los Angeles from March 29th to May 24th, 2025. Offering a new perspective on Lanthimos’ distinctive visual language, the exhibition showcases images from his recent photobooks, i shall sing these songs beautifully (MACK, 2024) and Dear God, the Parthenon is Still Broken (Void, 2024).
Lanthimos, known for his surreal storytelling and striking world-building, translates his cinematic sensibilities into a series of haunting stills. Shot during the filming of Kinds of Kindness (2024) and Poor Things (2023), these works navigate the blurred boundaries between fiction and reality, capturing fragments of staged environments and fleeting human presence.
In i shall sing these songs beautifully, the artist repurposes film sets and actors to create a parallel narrative, separate from the films yet deeply imbued with their essence. Meanwhile, Dear God, the Parthenon is Still Broken draws attention to the remnants of production—scaffolding, lighting rigs, and ephemeral objects—transforming them into poetic artifacts of staged reality.
While rooted in the world of cinema, the exhibition ultimately establishes a distinct photographic realm—one untethered from narrative constraints yet imbued with a cinematic sense of time and space. The works invite viewers to explore the liminal space between staged performance and lived experience, reinforcing Lanthimos’ role as a boundary-pushing visual artist.
To mark the exhibition’s opening, Lanthimos will join publisher Michael Mack in conversation on March 29 at 5:00 PM, offering insights into his approach to image-making beyond the moving image.
