Turkish Airlines has partnered with acclaimed media artist Refik Anadol to present the “Inner Portrait” project, showcasing the transformative experiences of four individuals from different continents who have never traveled before. This innovative initiative premiered at Art Basel and is now on display at the Istanbul Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) until December 1, 2024.
The “Inner Portrait” project delves into the profound desire to travel and its impact on human biology. Through captivating portraits, it reflects the inner worlds of these individuals, turning their experiences into remarkable works of art. The accompanying documentary, directed by BAFTA-awarded Jennifer Peedom and cinematographed by Renan Ozturk, focuses on how travel influences our biology through the stories of these four unique characters. It is truly inspiring to witness how art can encapsulate such deep human experiences.

The project features four individuals who had never traveled before. Their journeys included Brazilian Tuikuru exploring Tokyo’s vibrant streets, Kenyan Esther discovering Istanbul’s rich history, Sahar from Australia visiting ancient wonders in Göbeklitepe and Cappadocia, and Icelandic Sigurbjörn experiencing Jordan’s enchanting beauty. Each story is a testament to the transformative power of exploration and discovery. Data collection was conducted in collaboration with Neuroelectrics, utilizing EEG sensors and advanced technology devices like Empatica Watch to gather biological and neurobiological data during these experiences. This data was then transformed into stunning artwork by Refik Anadol and his talented team. The innovative use of technology in this project not only captures individual experiences but also elevates them into a collective narrative that resonates with audiences.
“Inner Portrait” exemplifies Turkish Airlines’ commitment to fostering cultural change and innovation, involving 220 people from around the globe in its production. The project reveals travel’s transformative power and will soon be exhibited in various locations worldwide. Its documentary is set to be available on digital platforms in 2025.
