Combining genetic code, AI and choreography

Combining genetic code, AI and choreography

Throughout his career, Wayne McGregor has explored the relationship between the body and technology. In 2017, McGregor introduced Autobiography (1.0), the first in a series of unique dance portraits guided by his genetic code. This innovative work layers personal memories with choreographic imprints, using a specially created algorithm based on McGregor’s DNA data.

In its latest iterations, the performance uses AISOMA, an AI tool developed with Google Arts and Culture, to introduce new movement options based on McGregor’s choreographic archive.  Wayne McGregor will present the latest versions of his Autobiography series, v95, and v96, at Sadler’s Wells on 12 and 13 March 2024. The performance features music by Jlin, set design by Ben Cullen Williams, and dramaturgy by Uzma Hameed, all collaborators on the original version of Autobiography. McGregor finds the dynamic reception of his work by audiences fascinating, emphasizing the individuality of each viewer’s experience and expressing his artistic freedom to follow his own path.
