Dialogue through time

Dialogue through time

In a historic collaboration, the Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam have joined forces to present a major exhibition on Anselm Kiefer. Entitled Anselm Kiefer: Sag mir wo die Blumen sind (Tell me where the flowers are), the exhibition will run from March 7th to June 9th, 2025 in both museums. Created in collaboration with the renowned German artist, the show will feature a mix of his past and new works, offering a comprehensive look at his creative evolution.

The centrepiece of the exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum is a new 24-metre-long installation by Kiefer, designed to occupy the space around the museum’s historic staircase. This work and another new installation will be shown alongside Kiefer’s earlier works from the Stedelijk’s collection, including Innenraum (1981) and Märkischer Sand (1982).

At the Van Gogh Museum, the exhibition will explore the profound influence of Vincent Van Gogh on Kiefer’s work. The museum will display key masterpieces by Van Gogh alongside Kiefer’s new paintings. This part of the exhibition will highlight the recurring motif of the sunflower in both artists’ work, such as Van Gogh’s La Berceuse (1889) and Kiefer’s Tournesols (1996).

The Stedelijk Museum exhibition is curated by Leontine Coelewij, while Edwin Becker curates the Van Gogh Museum show. A single ticket grants access to both exhibitions, allowing visitors to fully experience the breadth of Kiefer’s artistic journey and his dialogue with Van Gogh’s legacy.
