A New Perspective on Beauty

A New Perspective on Beauty

Last Sunday, Tate Britain hosted a mesmerising performance by Michaela Stark. Known for her innovative and body-positive approach, Stark uses corsetry to challenge traditional notions of beauty and oppression. The performance at Tate Britain was a striking example of her work, with Stark suspended in a wooden frame, draped in nude-coloured chiffon. This arrangement evoked a sense of vulnerability and defiance reminiscent of Antonio Corradini’s Veiled Modesty.

Stylist Alex Francisco and make-up artist Kevin Cordo created the artist’s look. The performance was part of a programme of special events to mark the end of the Sargent and Fashion exhibition. The programme explored how art can push boundaries and promote inclusivity, drawing inspiration from John Singer Sargent’s iconic portrait, Madame X.
