THE SOUL STATION, which opens today at Halle am Berghain in Berlin, is Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley’s first solo exhibition in Germany. This innovative show, commissioned by the LAS Art Foundation, explores ethical, political and moral choices through game-based installations and fictional universes. The exhibition is presented in two episodes, with the second episode premiering during Berlin Art Week on September 12th, 2024.
The forthcoming showcase will feature a mix of new commissions and a selection of Brathwaite-Shirley’s video games from the past five years. At the heart of the exhibition is the newly commissioned YOU CAN’T HIDE ANYTHING, which tells the story of a revolution against globalised slavery in a parallel society. The immersive installation, with its low-poly PlayStation 2 aesthetic, invites visitors to participate in a collaborative game that influences the outcome of the narrative.
Brathwaite-Shirley’s work combines lived experience with speculative fiction to highlight marginalised histories and perspectives. Visitors can also experience parts of the exhibition online, making it accessible to a wider audience. As well as challenging visitors to confront their own prejudices, the exhibition offers a profound commentary on social structures and exclusion.
THE SOUL STATION exhibition runs from July 12th to October 13th, 2024. Explore Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley’s artistic universe in our interview here.
