The Modern Art Museum (MAM) Shanghai presents Marina Abramović: Transforming Energy, running from October 10th, 2024, to February 28th, 2025. This landmark exhibition marks Abramović’s first solo show in China, curated by Shai Baitel in close collaboration with the artist. Inspired by her historic 1988 walk across the Great Wall of China with Ulay, the exhibition includes over 1,000 previously unseen images of that performance and introduces new artworks that explore transformative energy through audience participation.
The exhibition spans three floors, featuring a wide range of Abramović’s works, including her famed Transitory Objects and new crystal-based installations. These pieces invite the audience to engage with the artworks physically and conceptually. Central to the exhibition are crystals, which Abramović uses as a medium for healing and transformation, a continuation of her exploration of energy and spiritualism in art.
Notable works include Crystal Wall of Crying (2021), an installation that reflects on historical trauma and emotional healing through interaction with quartz crystals. Another highlight is Abramović’s Transitory Objects, which embody her philosophy of energy transfer between art and its audience. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in these works, creating a personal connection to Abramović’s ongoing exploration of performance and endurance.
This exhibition not only reflects Abramović’s career but also invites audiences to experience the transformative power of art. Transforming Energy offers an immersive journey through Abramović’s artistic practice, blending past experiences with new, participatory creations.
