Captain Boomer Collective’s powerful installation A Beached Whale has made its way to Baku, Azerbaijan, coinciding with the COP29 climate summit from November 10th to November 22nd, 2024. The hyper-realistic, life-size statue of a sperm whale brings the awe and disturbance of a whale stranding to the shores of the Caspian Sea, embodying an urgent message about humanity’s impact on nature.
As part of COP29, where global leaders and climate experts convene to address the climate crisis and responsibilities of wealthier nations, A Beached Whale serves as a dramatic metaphor for ecological distress. This installation, complete with actors simulating scientists examining the whale, blurs fiction and reality to deepen the viewer’s experience of ecological loss.
The installation has evoked emotional responses from visitors, prompting questions and interactions with the simulated stranding scene. This aligns with COP29’s mission to spark dialogue on climate change. As the summit progresses, A Beached Whale encourages reflection on humanity’s role in reversing environmental damage and calls attention to the urgency of action.
