This spring, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris presents David Hockney 25, a landmark retrospective that runs from April 9th to August 31st, 2025. Spanning all 11 galleries of the building, the exhibition brings together over 400 works created between 1955 and 2025, making it the most comprehensive exhibition of Hockney’s career to date. Personally curated by the artist in close collaboration with his studio, the show offers a sweeping view of seven decades of creation.
While early masterpieces like A Bigger Splash (1967) and Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972) are on view, the core of the exhibition is dedicated to Hockney’s work from the last 25 years. Here, nature takes center stage, with vast Yorkshire landscapes and Normandy blossoms painted in both oil and iPad strokes. In May Blossom on the Roman Road (2009), a hawthorn bush explodes into color, while Bigger Trees near Warter (2007), on loan from Tate, captures the solemn majesty of winter.
In Gallery 5, the 220 for 2020 iPad series tracks the seasons in Normandy day by day, while the final rooms shift toward introspection. New paintings made in London in 2023–2024 reflect on mortality, spirituality, and legacy, including After Munch: Less is Known than People Think (2023). One gallery transforms into a music hall, immersing visitors in Hockney’s operatic set designs, created in collaboration with 59 Studio.
“This is the biggest show I’ve ever done—it’s going to be good, I think,” Hockney remarked ahead of the opening. With joyful experimentation and deep emotional clarity, David Hockney 25 is a celebration of an artist who continues to see—and show us—the beauty of the world.
