The Musée Carnavalet in Paris presents Le Paris d’Agnès Varda, de-ci, de-là, on view from April 9th to August 24th, 2025. This exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the legendary filmmaker by focusing on her lesser-known photographic work and her deep-rooted connection to the city of Paris.
At its heart is the iconic courtyard of rue Daguerre, where Varda lived and created from 1951 to 2019—first as a photographer, then as a filmmaker. Visitors are invited to explore rare early prints, including images from her first solo show in 1954, as well as scenes from her everyday surroundings. Highlights include the poetic Daguerréotypes (1975), a portrait of local shopkeepers, and film stills from Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962), where the city mirrors the heroine’s emotional journey. The show also features over 130 photographs, personal items, archival documents, and a sculpture of her beloved cat, Nini. By weaving together photography and cinema, the exhibition paints a vivid portrait of Paris through Varda’s singular lens. It’s a tender, playful, and deeply human homage to the Nouvelle Vague icon and her lifelong love for the city.
