Exploring the media materiality

Media artist Liu Jiayu, celebrated for her immersive and thought-provoking installations, has unveiled her latest creation, entitled Waves of Code. Believing that technology now shapes human experience and serves as the primary medium for information consumption, Jiayu delves into the reflexivity of media and explores its materiality through a fresh perspective. Using a combination of LED lights and lenses, she constructs a portal that blurs the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds, mimicking the ebb and flow of simulated sea waves.

Jiayu’s artistic approach is deeply philosophical. She draws inspiration from Walter Benjiamin, a German philosopher, who critiqued the disappearance of the “spiritual halo” that lives in the era dominated by mechanical reproduction. Her work, Waves of Code, is an artistic exploration of the intricate relationships, inherent dangers, and novel sensory perspectives that media can control. It contemplates the evolving interplay between creativity and technology, unveiling a new paradigm in the process.
