Paris will host a landmark auction on July 9th, 2026, as Martin Margiela joins forces with Kerry Taylor Auctions and Maurice Auction to present an unprecedented selection from his personal archive. Bringing together more than 200 lots dating from 1984 to 2008, the sale offers an exceptionally rare look inside the world of one of fashion’s most influential and elusive figures.
An auction and exhibition revealing the private world of Martin Margiela
Ahead of the auction, a public exhibition will take place in Paris from July 4th to 8th. Curated by longtime collaborator Bob Verhelst, the display invites visitors into Margiela’s universe through objects rarely, if ever, seen in public.
The sale spans sketches, photographs, prototypes, lookbooks, personal belongings, and garments tied to defining moments of the designer’s career. Among the highlights are Margiela’s customised 1988 office telephone bearing his handwritten number, the graffiti-covered Tabi boots presented after the 1991 Palais Galliera show, and a runway veil prototype marked with the designer’s own pencil notes.
A particularly intimate section focuses on the wardrobe of Margiela’s mother, featuring around sixty Hermès garments, bags, shoes, and accessories from his years at the French house between 1997 and 2003. Collectively, these pieces offer a revealing portrait of both the designer’s creative vision and private life.
More than an auction, the project presents Margiela’s archive as a living record of contemporary fashion history, tracing the ideas, processes, and objects behind a body of work that continues to influence design today.
Step inside the elusive world of Martin Margiela. In our conversation, he reflects on deconstruction, imagination, and the beauty found in the ordinary.
