The Hyundai Translocal Series has announced new global institutional partnerships shaping the future of contemporary art

The Hyundai Translocal Series announces two new international collaborations extending its model of long-term cultural exchange through institutional partnership. From September 2026, the New Museum (New York) will collaborate with Ulsan Art Museum, while another multi-year programme will link the Seo-Seoul Museum of Art with the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation, uniting artists, researchers and institutions through commissions, residencies and exhibitions.

Institutional partnership fostering long-term artistic exchange

Launched in 2025 by Hyundai Motor Company, the Hyundai Translocal Series promotes sustained collaboration between Korean museums and leading global institutions. Moving beyond single exhibitions, the initiative supports joint research, new commissions, publications and public programming that probe the tension between local contexts and global exchange.

The first collaboration opens this September with a new commission by Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen, shown concurrently at the New Museum and Ulsan Art Museum. In New York, a video installation will occupy the museum’s glass-front elevators introduced in its OMA-designed expansion, with further details to follow.

Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation explores art and emerging technologies

A second partnership connects the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation with the Seo-Seoul Museum of Art, a new hub for media-based practices. The programme examines the social, ecological and historical impact of emerging technologies, with emphasis on artificial intelligence.

Four artists or collectives will join a residency developed with Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), working alongside researchers to produce new commissions at the intersection of technology, ecology and society. The works will debut in Abu Dhabi in 2027 before travelling to Seoul in 2028.

Art commissions rooted in local perspectives and global dialogue

Through these collaborations, the Hyundai Translocal Series continues to position contemporary art as a field of cross-cultural exchange. By supporting research-driven commissions and institutional partnerships, the programme links local histories with shared global concerns, building a network where artistic experimentation and collaborative knowledge sit at the centre of contemporary practice.
