Georg Baselitz at Serpentine Gallery

The Serpentine Gallery presents an exhibition showcasing the artwork of the distinguished artist, Georg Baselitz. Starting from 5th October 2023, until 7th January 2024, visitors can explore a wide collection of Baselitz’s sculptures and drawings. A towering sculpture called Zero Dom (Zero Dome), with a height of nine meters, will be revealed in the Royal Parks, marking its debut in the UK in an absolutely monumental installation. The exhibition Georg Baselitz: Sculpture 2011-2015 is a manifestation of Serpentine’s enduring pledge to display the extraordinary creations of visionary artists.

Georg Baselitz, a notable German artist born in 1938, gained acknowledgment in post-war Germany as a painter before achieving fame for his distinct style. Throughout his six-decade career, Baselitz created a method of inverting human forms and other subjects in his expressive paintings to surpass narrative and content. In 1979, Baselitz directed his focus towards sculpting, utilizing wood to form coarse representations of figures and body components. His investigation of the conflict between realistic and conceptual art persisted through this novel method. Georg Baselitz: Sculpture 2011-2015 presents an exclusive chance to witness towering sculptures and expressive ink drawings, handpicked by the artist himself. The exhibition entices visitors to emerge in a forest-like display of 10 raw timber sculptures that have never been exhibited before.

Commissioned texts by contemporary artists and new poems by Herta Müller and Norman Rosenthal appear in the accompanying catalogue. It also includes essays by art historians Michael Baxandall and Eric Darragon, and an interview between Georg Baselitz and Hans Ulrich Obrist.
