Warhol and his colorful world of textiles

Dovecot Studios will host Scotland’s first exhibition dedicated to Andy Warhol’s commercial textile designs. A leading figure in Pop Art, Warhol began his career in commercial and advertising art in the 1950s and 1960s, catering to the needs of clients such as Glamour magazine. The exhibition opens on 26 January 2024.

Featuring a collection of more than 35 textile patterns created by Warhol during this period, the exhibition depicts a variety of vibrant objects, including ice-cream sundaes, delicious toffee apples, colorful buttons, sliced lemons, pretzels, and energetic clowns. Warhol was attracted to the world of textiles for its ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, but he also saw textile design as an important tool for his success. In the 1950s, the American textile industry was booming, and Warhol’s printed fabrics were used to make thousands of dresses and skirts.

The exhibition is organized by the Fashion and Textile Museum and was previously presented in London in 2023.
