Maria Callas, the leading female opera singer of the 20th century, embodied the emotions expressed by Tosca in her aria Vissi d’arte. Tosca has triumphed over her enemy, but faces an uncertain future that causes her to reflect on her life. The intersection of art and life, as conveyed by Callas, has always fascinated world-renowned performance artist Marina Abramović. Now Abramović’s acclaimed opera project, 7 Deaths of Maria Callas, makes its UK debut with a celebratory premiere.
The infamous deaths of Callas, known as the Tigress, are re-enacted in the production of 7 Deaths of Maria Callas, featuring iconic arias that were of great significance to the singer. Marina Abramović and co-star Willem Dafoe portray these deaths in seven different films.
