A sense of dynamic purpose

Walking in Milan by Julian Opie is currently on display at Portrait Milano, transforming the Piazza del Quadrilatero into a vibrant open-air museum. The exhibition, curated by Valentina Ciarallo, features eight new monumental sculptures from Opie’s Walking Figures series, created specifically for this venue. These striking artworks, characterised by their minimalist aesthetic, linear contours and contrasting colours, capture the essence of human movement.

Inspired by classical statuary, Julian Opie reinterprets ancient sculpture through his Walking Figures, presenting a modern canon of self-expression. The figures, depicting everyday pedestrians, reflect common urban gestures and invite social interaction, blending seamlessly into the urban environment. Opie believes that human gait is as distinctive as handwriting or voice, highlighting the grace and dynamic purpose of walking.

The Walking in Milan exhibition runs from July 3rd to August 27th, 2024, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience Opie’s compelling work in a vibrant urban setting.
