The Fondation Azzedine Alaïa presents Azzedine Alaïa, Thierry Mugler: 1980-1990, Two Decades of Artistic Connivance, a landmark exhibition exploring the creative dialogue between two of fashion’s most visionary couturiers. Curated by Olivier Saillard, the exhibition will be on view in Paris from March 3rd to June 29th, 2025 offering a rare insight into the profound mutual influence and friendship between Alaïa and Mugler.
Showcasing over 40 of Thierry Mugler’s creations alongside Alaïa’s archival pieces, the exhibition highlights their shared commitment to sculpting the female form with precision and theatricality. Their contrasting yet complementary approaches—Mugler’s dramatic, high-impact silhouettes and Alaïa’s mastery of cut and construction—shaped an era of fashion that redefined glamour and power dressing.
Among the standout pieces is a tuxedo series designed by Alaïa for Mugler’s Fall-Winter 1979-1980 collection. Recognizing Alaïa’s technical genius, Mugler entrusted him with tailoring elements that would become hallmarks of his aesthetic. This collaboration not only reinforced their artistic bond but also played a crucial role in Alaïa’s decision to launch his own label.
Another highlight is Mugler’s 1984 grand spectacle at the Zenith, a showcase of his extravagant designs that captured the theatricality of the decade. Alaïa, known for his more intimate and meticulously crafted presentations, was deeply inspired by Mugler’s bold vision, incorporating elements of sculptural tailoring into his own collections.
The exhibition also delves into their personal camaraderie—Mugler championed Alaïa’s talent, introducing him to key figures in the fashion industry and even orchestrating his breakthrough New York show in 1982. Their friendship extended beyond the atelier, as they spent summers together in Tunisia, sharing ideas and shaping each other’s artistic perspectives.

Visitors will witness how their designs, though distinct, were united by a shared vision of femininity—powerful, sculptural, and unapologetically bold.
