The CHANEL Next Prize recognizes ten contemporary artists who are reshaping contemporary art and culture, moving fluidly across disciplines and hailing from countries as diverse as the UK, USA, Brazil, Singapore, Iceland and Georgia. Winners include interdisciplinary artist Tolia Astakhishvili, filmmaker Kantemir Balagov, choreographer Oona Doherty, game developer Sam Eng, multidisciplinary artist Ho Tzu Nyen, visual artist and director Fox Maxy, musician and visual artist Moor Mother, artist and educator Dalton Paula, composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir and singer Davóne Tines.
The jury for the second edition included cultural icons such as actress Tilda Swinton, artist Cao Fei and curators Hans Ulrich Obrist and Legacy Russell. Each artist will receive €100,000 in funding for their ambitious projects and a two-year mentorship and networking programme through CHANEL’s global cultural partners, such as the Royal College of Art in London.
Launched in 2021 as part of the CHANEL Culture Fund, the Next Prize aims to support artists who are redefining their disciplines, continuing CHANEL’s legacy of cultural patronage. Yana Peel, Global Head of Arts & Culture at CHANEL, said she was excited to support these catalysts and pioneers who are reshaping cultural fields from art and opera to cinema and game design.
