The Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris presents a major retrospective of Mark Rothko’s oeuvre. The exhibition features over 100 paintings from throughout Rothko’s career, from his early figurative works to his iconic later abstractions.
Mark Rothko is the undisputed master of colour and emotion. His paintings are immersive, transcendent experiences that transport the viewer into a realm of pure sensation. The Fondation Louis Vuitton retrospective brings together works from the world’s major institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Tate in London and the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C.
The exhibition traces Rothko’s artistic career from his early works, influenced by mythology and surrealism, to the apogee of his exploration of colour, and continues with his gradually more subdued paintings, characterised by a dark and sombre palette.
A rare opportunity to see a comprehensive overview of Mark Rothko’s work, the Fondation Louis Vuitton retrospective will run until 2 February 2024.
