Google returns to Milan Design Week 2025 with Making the Invisible Visible, an immersive light installation by artist Lachlan Turczan, on view from April 7th to 13th at Garage 21. Expanding on past collaborations, the project explores the ephemeral nature of light, transforming it into sculptural, tangible forms.
Developed with Google’s Chief Design Officer Ivy Ross, the installation continues their shared interest in cymatics—the study of sound, vibration, and form. Turczan and his team have designed custom optics to control light beams, creating towering columns of light that appear solid. As Ross explains, the goal is to materialize abstract ideas into physical experiences, revealing the unseen forces shaping design and technology.
A key highlight is Turczan’s sculptural light structures, which use focused projection techniques to give light a spatial presence. Another section of the exhibition showcases Google’s hardware evolution, including a new thermostat that subtly shifts its display as the viewer approaches, blending into its surroundings until needed.
By bringing Turczan’s practice into a gallery context, the exhibition underscores the intersection of art, design, and technology. As visitors move through the space, the interplay of light and vapor invites an intimate, tactile engagement with an otherwise intangible medium. ‘Everyone wants to reach out and touch the light,’ Turczan notes, calling this instinctive reaction a testament to the project’s success.
