Lalanne’s whimsical world on display

Christie’s is gearing up to present an extraordinary exhibition and auction showcasing the works of François-Xavier Lalanne, a trailblazer in contemporary sculpture. The show, titled François-Xavier Lalanne Sculpteur: Collection Dorothée Lalanne, will be curated by Simon Porte Jacquemus and will be open to the public from October 4th to October 10th, 2024, at Christie’s Rockefeller Center in New York City. Following the exhibition, a live auction will take place on October 10th, featuring a distinctive selection of 70 lots from the collection of Lalanne’s daughter, Dorothée.

This exhibition is a celebration of François-Xavier Lalanne’s innovative spirit, characterized by his playful yet sophisticated approach to sculpture. Inspired by his fascination with the animal kingdom, Lalanne crafted whimsical sculptures that often serve practical purposes, blurring the lines between art and design. His artistic process is marked by meticulous attention to detail and a touch of humor, resulting in captivating pieces that engage viewers.

Dorothée Lalanne has shared her excitement about collaborating with Christie’s, highlighting the importance of presenting her father’s work in such a celebratory light. She notes that François-Xavier’s creations transport viewers to a magical realm, where each sculpture tells a story and invites a deeper connection to their imaginative essence. This interplay of realism and fantasy is especially evident in Lalanne’s animal forms, which often exhibit human traits.

The exhibition will be free and open to the public, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Lalanne’s enchanting world. Curator Simon Porte Jacquemus aims to highlight the playful spirit of François-Xavier’s work, reminding audiences of the joy and creativity that art can inspire. The exhibition not only honors Lalanne’s groundbreaking contributions but also fosters a continuing dialogue between art and design, enhanced by Jacquemus’s contemporary vision.

Visitors can expect a thoughtfully curated blend of whimsy, craftsmanship, and artistry that pays tribute to one of the most beloved sculptors of the postwar era. Christie’s International Head of Design, Alex Heminway, has emphasized the significance of this auction as a landmark moment in Lalanne’s career, marking the first-ever solo auction dedicated solely to his work. Known for their unexpected forms and hidden mechanisms, Lalanne’s sculptures continue to challenge conventional notions of sculpture, redefining its place in contemporary art.
